The Action is Less Important than How You Got There

(Fiona was talking about not being able to get herself to get a divorce, yet even though she knows there is no reason to stay in the relationship.)

“Taking the action is not the most important thing. The important thing is to straighten out whatever is causing the conflict about the action. Even if you took the action that you’ll ultimately end up taking, it may not turn out well until you have dealt with the underlying issues that are causing your reality experience to be skewed.”

(Chas said he didn’t understand what Jane just said.)

“Last week we were talking about you withholding information, or doing whatever you need to do to get through what you want to get through, without getting too entangled with the person you’re communicating with, if you think there’s going to be a problem. You tell people what you think they want to hear, or some version of that, which then inhibits the real communication from happening. And then you don’t find out the potential of that moment.

So I think the reason you weren’t able to take in what I just said to Fiona was because it’s at the heart of this defense system of yours I’ve just described. You are invested in getting the outcome you want, rather than having the outcome result from following the right process. But what’s really important is the process, and the outcome is secondary. It’s just the natural outcome of following the process. It can only turn out the way it is really meant to turn out, if you have followed the right process to get there — in other words, if you are following a path of truth. It appears that you think truth will turn out to be against you, rather than for you.”
