Defense Systems Defining Reality

(To Group) “Defense systems are about who gets to define what reality is. And whoever is the most in control of defining the reality around them, is the most successful at defending their limiting decisions. The purpose of the defense system is to protect the limiting decision, so that you don’t feel you are bad, stupid, not worthy of respect, or whatever the limiting decision is that you’ve got a defense system around. It’s about trying to control the people around you, so that they don’t bring up the pain of that decision about yourself. People are walking around saying (in subtle, often non-verbal ways), ‘Don’t look at me that way. Don’t say this word. Don’t ask me this kind of a question.’ We all know, we get a sense from people what kinds of things we can say to them or not, how we can look at them or not, how close we can stand to them, what kind of conversations we can have with them or not. And it’s mostly all happening on an unconscious level. The reason for this is that people are defending their defense systems so that you won’t bring up the limiting decision. People are convinced that their limiting decisions are true, and they don’t want to come into here-and-now reality in order to find out what the truth is for certain. One of the things that happens in this group, is we go past the defense systems to bring out the limiting decisions so you can find out they are not true. Limiting decisions are never true.
If you have a defense system that interlocks with someone else’s defense system, then you will be activating each other’s defense systems. And that often happens in relationships, because you pick people whose defense systems are similar to the original person you made your limiting decision in relation to when you were a child. And that’s one of the benefits of a group like this, where people didn’t choose each other. This means you probably don’t have structures that interlock with each other, so something different will probably happen in this group than would happen ordinarily out in the world with people who you choose.”
